Family garden for a new farmhouse

The large site that this new farmhouse was built on gave scope for creating some generous borders with room for trees, shrubs and perennials to be planted and still have space for a large lawn for the children to play on.

This layered planting of trees, shrubs and perennials replicates what happens in nature and means that the ground is covered with planting, leaving little room for weeds to appear and so reducing maintenance.

The plants chosen do not require lots of attention such as staking and dividing, so although this is a large garden with big borders, it should not require hours of attention.
